Pink Floyd was a progressive rock band formed in London, England in 1965. They became widely known for their experimental, psychedelic and extended compositions, technical sonic experimentation, lyrics involving deeply philosophical and less topical concepts as well as ornate and involved live shows that were visual as well as psychological journeys. They became one of the most commercially successful bands in the history of popular music. By the year 2013, Pink Floyd had sold more than 250 million records worldwide, with The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall two becoming two of the best-selling albums of all time.
Founding members included Roger Waters (bass, rhythm guitar & vocals) and Nick Mason (drums, percussion & vocals), who, after many iterations of the bands’ lineup were joined by Syd Barrett (lead & rhythm guitars, vocals), Bob Klose (lead guitar), Richard Wright (keyboards, organ, piano, vocals), and David Gilmour (bass, keyboards, lead & rhythm guitars, vocals)
Working under the name the Tea Set and after discovering another band was also using the name, Syd Barrett created the name “Pink Floyd” combining two names of blues musicians in his record collection (Pink Anderson and Floyd Council) at the spur of the moment.
