1973 saw a music club named “CBGB” opened by Hilly Kristal in New York in Manhattan’s East Village. Previous incarnations of the bar were as a biker bar and before that, a dive bar. As per the original owner’s vision, CBGB was meant to stand for “Country, BlueGrass, and Blues” yet CBGB soon became famous for punk rock and new wave bands like the Blondie, Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, Television, and The Talking Heads. From the early in the 1980s and after, CBGB became known for hardcore punk exclusively.
